Gary Miller was announced as the consensus choice, but the Republican Party made a foolish decision to have him as the anointed. Congressman Miller needs to either run against Royce or discover the private sector again.

Thanks to Top 2, if people knew Gary Miller’s policy positions, he will do just as bad as former Senator Santorum.

What is Congressional District 31 (2011)

41% Democratic, 37% Republican, 18% Decline to State with a history of people voting for Democratic Party candidates for President and Governor.

I think this will be a suicide run for Gary Miller, and I thought he was a prudent businessman and knew when to pull in and pull out.

56 Obama, 41 McCain, 49 Brown 42 Whitman

If he wanted to waste money, it would be better to give money to the local food bank or animal shelters.

Fortunately in California you would be able to sign my nomination petition for State Assembly as a Democratic Party member or a Decline to State voter due to the new Prop 14 Open primaries, but if you want to vote to decide who will be the Republican nominee you have to make the switch as soon as you can. And a month later Election Day in June 2012 if you don’t like us, you can wash off those Republican cooties as soon as you can.

Here is some information on voter registration for California.

The days of Bill Postmus and his fundraising acumen are long gone for the San Bernardino County Republicans, but there was a day when the party had no problem raising funds in the late 90s. In the last month the party did not raise any money, with 1250 in expenses, with 2500 in unpaid bills in the federal account.

I don’t know what will it take for the party to have the old glory it used to have. I was a member of the central committee, but it was not my cup of tea. And if I have to pay $250 each year to be part of it, I am not willing until the party has more diversity in opinion. Its not fun spending a few hours each month when you have the minority opinions on many issues.

After reading her column about the Republican Party and moderates that is hosted on her blog and the Flash Report, I decided to post my reply on my personal website since it might not get accepted. This is a longer version of what I replied to on her page.

Kathy, the Republican agenda may be a winning agenda economically. However as a gay man Id be scared big time if many in the establishment got in power in Sacramento. I do not want Bob Huff, Joel Anderson and their friends to write legislation attacking LGBT people which is another form of big government.

I do want industry to return to California, I do want people and businesses to uturn from Texas and Florida. Democrats fail to understand without private industry we have no public services.

The goal for the party is to stop using the wedge issues of bashing gays and Latinos and work on solving the real issues that we need to worry about. I do want us to “run to win”, I also agree that we need to “play to win”. Not all parts of California are receptive to the agenda of the Republican Party, but expecting a politician Sharon Runner, Bob Huff, Joel Anderson’s caliber to be elected in Burbank, Chino, Paso Robles or Pasadena, I would like to have some of the drugs you might be taking.

We are not in Oklahoma or Utah and that is what the California Republican establishment fails to recognize. We have to make our own special blend of Republican Politics. I do agree that we should not give away the store to big business and labor unions that grease the palms of politicians with donations.

I do agree that we are being taxed enough and we are not getting enough in return. We do need to chew the fat of government off to make it efficient. As what I said to Ingra Barks, the 2008 platform is fine it just needs to remove just a little bit of content and I think we can reach out to more people better. It would not be a total revision compared to Munger’s draft, but its more reasonable.

The California Republicans need to throw both visions down the shredder and start again with their state platform.

A platform that is vague and opaque will do nothing with the base that knocks on doors and staffs the phone banks, but we also need to make sure we can reach out to certain districts that have been alienated by certain facets of the Republican Party such as the Latinos and the LGBT community. Yet we should give the moderates who typically fund our party the confidence to continue funding our party with an agenda that does not turn off hearts and minds.

Yes, I am a supporter of the Munger faction. However we need to go after the ideas that win universally with all Republicans, yet decentralize on certain issues where certain regions of our state might love the gays and some regions may want to hide them under lock and key in the closet.

I agree with Governor Schwarzenegger that we are failing in the box office (Election Day) with 2008 and 2010 to name two elections that the Republican Party has tanked hard in trying to strike new ground.

Most of us can agree with Ingra Barks, a Bakersfield area radio talk show host/commentator on the issues she mentions such as: seniors of a certain income level should not be taxed their way into poverty, our agriculture industry should be protected from heavy regulation when we are the breadbasket of the nation, that we need a water system that would keep people employed instead of sending half their people into poverty in the Central Valley and beyond, Crime victims should be given our fullest support compared to the Democrats in the state legislature judiciary committee, people should be protected from government seizing their properties for the benefit for another property owner, the second amendment should reign supreme where cancelled carry and self defense should not be compromised.

Aside from these issues, there are some albatrosses that hang around the neck of our party. Cultural and social issues do honestly divide our party and inhibit its growth in our state. If we want California to remain any semblance of its prime we need to have a comeback in the box office so we can bring some sanity to Sacramento.

Immigration may be the issue that will cause us more problems than views on abortion and the gays. With a growing Latino population, we can not afford to maintain a minuteman philosophy even though the undocumented population has been a severe unfunded mandate on local, county and state budgets. Latinos are known to be hard workers and they help drive the American society. Deporting 14m illegals of all nations from Europe, Asia, Canada and south of the border would honestly be impractical. We are going to have to integrate this population so they can be part of our society, but we need to avoid the mistakes of Ronald Reagan and punish employers who do hire undocumented workers, and then we need to undo Plyler v. Doe to make it where we are not obligated to educate the undocumented for free. Also we need to require that 1 parent of the couple who makes a child in our nation must have legal status from a green card or citizenship to make their child an American. We will need to have a great immigration compromise if we ever want meaningful reform to happen.

On the two cultural wedge issues I have some solutions on the two issues that cause us to fail in the costal communities, abortion should be left to the individual and should only be paid for by non-government funds. Legislators should be free to their conscious to vote on LGBT issues. LGBT issue support or opposition is determined by religion, what region of our state people are from and the age of the legislator. Aside from that we should keep the existing platform with abortion and LGBT opposition stripped out.

We can not afford to be vapid like Mr.Munger, but we still need to be inclusive where Ms.Barks and the Republican establishment uses Latinos and LGBT people as raw meat on the balcony for their base. Existing platform does not need to be torched, but it needs less cuts than expected.

California Republicans have made a fatal error that makes them irrelevant in the eyes of California voters. Just as how the Tea Party revolution swept through Congress, California was impermeable because voters find the message not to their standards. Voters in California may want different things compared to the rest of the nation. California is not exactly monolithic in its thinking, depending on where you travel the political winds travel in different directions. Inland California may want one thing, but Coastal California is not finding the Republican message appealing.

However Republican activists on the far right think that the same philosophy that has reined supreme which lost elections in California is the way to go. Mike Spence and Jon Fleischman believe if we keep our strident views on abortion, opposition to anything gay and an immigration policy that is strictly about deporting all the illegals at any cost we will regain the state house.

Unfortunately California Republicans have been just as competitive as the Kansas City Royals where we have lost seats instead of gaining representation in Sacramento and Washington. Even if we do not gain the majority in Sacramento, gaining our representation back with mainstream legislators will help prevent some of the most bizarre legislation from passing in committees when committee representation gradually increases each election. If the fringe of our party remains as the powerbrokers expect us to lose our 1/3rds veto and more insane legislation to pass.

The dogmatic approach to politics where the fringe of our party believes it should be their way or the highway has done little to help our party. We have lost AD 5, 15, 78, 80 in the last two elections while we lost all statewide offices in 2010. Our former chairman Ron Nehring may believe that conservative red meat platforms like the national 2000 and 2004 ones may be winning platforms that helped Bush win, but Bush lost California.

If we want young voters, if we want Latinos, if we want the independents and decline to states to come back home we need to change our strategy. Our strategy should stay away from the big wedge of telling people to fear people different than themselves and actually come up with solutions so we can make our state and nation a better place. Problem is we cannot win the hearts and souls of all Californian voters, but we should have a platform that is welcoming yet stays the course. As Republicans we need to be realistic about our goals and aspirations, expecting Californians to embrace our agenda that the conservative establishment wants is like expecting Lindsay Lohan to stay away from trouble.

It is not 1984 when Reagan won California anymore; California is different due to its changing demographics. The same people who helped give Ronald Reagan his victory and us winning statewide offices are dying and moving away where we need to find new blood to make California work.

Want to know how the Republican Party can reach out to the areas that used to vote for Republicans such as Silicon Valley and the Central Valley? It is quite easy, stop being bigoted towards LGBT people. As someone who was bullied for being perceived as LGBT in high school, I find it disgusting that the political party I was weaned on has throw the raw meat on the balcony instead of expanding our political appeal.

Hearing the rhetoric that led to 97.5% of the Republican caucus to vote no on SB 48 and AB 9 makes me embarrassed to be a Republican. SB 48 and AB 9 is not about indoctrination of our children, it is about making safe and affirming learning environments so our children can learn. Is that too much to ask for, Mike Morrell and Jean Fuller? When I thought the only major hostile legislators were Joel Anderson and Bob Huff, learning that most of the caucus does not care about the marginalized in our school house walls makes me fight harder despite the odds.

When students are in fear of being beaten up and harassed where they take their lives in the instance of Seth Walsh who lived in Jean Fuller’s district or the ongoing harassment by students and staff in Bill Emmerson’s district in Menifee you know that these laws are absolutely needed where a school district failed to provide equal access to a gay straight alliance for gay history month when they allowed the black students association to do a presentation for black history month.

It is absurd when in response to AB 9, Senator Fuller exclaims that, “schools are burdened already with too many “one-size-fits-all” state laws, and local districts should be making the calls.”That’s why we have school boards and superintendents”. However Jean when school districts fail to follow their responsibilities that is when we need new laws to help mandate the school districts to do their job to help provide a safe learning environment so students can actually learn. It is just like in the civil rights movement for the African American community, we pass one round of laws then the states and municipalities flout the laws then we pass another round of laws that have force so those groups would be required to provide fairness and equality to all. Even though we passed school safety laws for LGBT students in our state in the last ten years, unfortunately school districts have flouted the regulations and just left them under the door mat.

If school districts want to avoid lawsuits, their basic responsibility is to do the job they were supposed to do. Protect students from harassment and intimidation and protect the students the right to free expression. If we want to reduce the need for new legislation, we all have to work together to make sure schools are safe no matter what ethnicity, religion or sexuality you may be.

Personally I would vote to repeal AB 131, but since that would be politically unpopular and unlikely to happen in the People’s Republic of California. I would have a clause stating that if the state has a budget deficit of over 10 billion the law would be void until the state would be in better fiscal shape.

Even though I loathe the Republican Party for its hostility towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community; the Democratic Party does not give me any solace either. With bills such as AB 131 which gives scarce taxpayer funds to the college education of undocumented “illegals”, to AB 889 which requires parents to hire two babysitters to cover lunch and break rules and to have to pay them minimum wage we can finally come up with the answer why Californians have a mad rush to leave the state.

California cannot afford to continue to be run as a People’s Republic nor should it be run as an annex of Utah either. I could understand the progressive majority in the state legislature supporting aid for the illegal children who are undocumented, but we cannot afford it. When students are desperate to take Interior Design just for the units you know something is wrong in Sacramento. If progressives want to fund their grand designs they need to stop being hostile to the job creators so we can provide hope and opportunity to all of California.

Say no to theocracy and say yes to job creation to make California golden again.

Republicans thought it was going to get better in Election 2012 with Proposition 11 that changed redistricting, but since redistricting went for the worse the Democratic Party is trying to make sure that there is a party that is there for the people in the new legislative districts particularly in our growing areas of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

New legislative districts in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties will be the toughest fight for the Republican party of California.

Rancho Cucamonga and Upland will likely be represented by Joe Baca, Riverside will likely be represented by an openly gay school board member Mark Takano, Upland will likely be represented by Democrats for State Assembly and State Senate, Bob Dutton will have a toss-up in his chance to serve his last term in the State Assembly, downtown Riverside will also be represented by a Democratic Party legislator too.

Even though the 2011 redistricting was not safe for the Republican Party, it shows the problem the party has in its efforts to maintain its relevancy. I read a post by former State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore on how regulation cripples business out of California, but even if the party is right on that issue. There are still skeletons in the closet that lead towards the voters of Californians telling the Republicans “thanks, but no thanks”.

Inland California is going to turn more blue than performers at the Blue Man Group, and I am here as your canary in the coal mine to help prevent this from happening. As what I stated previously, pro-life views and flogging the queers on a stake are not going to drive Latino voters to the party. I even told Randy Thomasson on his private voice mail line, you need socialists that dance to the beat of your fundamentalist beat like Democratic Party State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz of New York State if you want to reign in theocracy in California. Cutting education and social welfare funding will be a major turnoff to the Latino voter. It has been proven from a 2011 poll by Republican pollsters Moore and Wilson that only 22 percent of Latinos want to see hard core conservatism and stick to core values of the party.

The scoop is the Democratic Party is going to have a massive voting drive targeting the Latinos of San Bernardino and Riverside County and the Republican Party of California and those respective county parties will need to think fast in how to keep them in the fold. Its not about social conservatism that many Latinos have in common with the party, its not about tax cuts. It is going to be a difficult message, even in a Latino dominated assembly district a gay moderate Latino and a gay social conservative Latino both had problems against Democrats in our district.

And since many of our cities in San Bernardino and Riverside County are Latino dominated, we might have a future lawsuit on our hands with the voter rights act. So Republicans will likely need to consider the best diverse bunch they have to avoid any problems in the future.

The big wedge needs to be retired, white voters are no longer the majority in our state. People are becoming more accepting of LGBT people in our communities. We need to fight for how to make the state work for all of us. It should not matter what ethnicity, religion or romantic inclination you have. The older voter that votes Republican also will become history in California and the United States. We need to recognize the youth of our nation and treat them as equals and not as disposable pawns like what President Obama did in 2008 since they will be a major voting bloc in 2016.

We need to stop scapegoating populations for the problems in society and work as a team. Inclusion wins. If we throw away a community they will be happy to jump forces to the other side. Black people used to be decent Republican voters in the early 20th century, then today they are only less than a tenth to support the Republicans. A welcoming party leads to Republican success and if we further upset the Latino voter we will likely have an irreversible problem.

When we thought there would be some sanity in the California Republican Party, I guess there will be none at all. Young voters and the educated will likely not bother. A political party’s platform is symbolic and does not matter much due to American elections being candidate centered and the party has no direct sway in selecting candidates who enter the primary for an election.

When will we have a political party that will be relevant for all parts of our state. If we want to succeed we must have a platform that reflects an agenda that can work in all parts of our state. Certain parts of our state may want lock boxes on women’s reproductive issues, and certain parts of our state may want to make sure the inheritances of same sex couples gets seized by parents who do not approve of their choices. We are just as bad as the Democratic Party who adds regulation to the small business. The only thing as Republicans we should state on abortion is abortion should not be paid for by the taxpayer and should be paid for by private funds only.

If we want Silicon Valley, if we want the San Fernando Valley and other populated areas that once elected Republicans we need to get our grubby hands off people’s personal choices. Lets stay out of the pocketbooks and stay out of the bedrooms whenever we can.

Following the status quo for the last two decades has not done much to improve our party. As stated on my past column, we are on the road to losing the 1/3rds firewall in both chambers in the state legislature and we will need to do something to expand our audience. Without new Republicans we will not have Republican safe districts or even tossup seats.
