There is a new form of civil disobedience going on this year for next year’s presidential election, the glitter bomb. LGBT and progressive campaigners have glitter bombed Newt Gingrich, former governor Tim Pawlenty and Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann for their hostile attitudes towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people in our nation.

Although it may seem to be a cute new way of protest and was amusing for the first time, it will get these individuals in deeper trouble than the equality campaigners who chained themselves to the White House fence last year. Yes, we may remember the activists who threw pies at Anita Bryant in the 1970s for her opposition to LGBT people, but we need to change our strategies in how to fight for equality the right way.

Throwing stuff at people is assault, if you can not do it to President Obama do not do it at all. If Michelle Bachmann became the Republican nominee, the Secret Service is not going to take these cute antics kindly.

As what I said on the GetEqual Facebook wall, we need to change strategies and do viral videos where we can share the message on sites such as Youtube and Vimeo. We can have political action committees even use these videos that inform voters about the regressive ideas that future Republican Party presidential nominees may have, such as the majority of Republican Party presidential candidates want to undo DADT repeal even though troops elsewhere are still effective with LGBT people in their armed services.

If we get independents and young people to avoid choosing these non inclusive candidates then we can make a difference. Maybe homophobia will be passé in the 2016 elections.

There is a new bill that aspires to require state schools to teach about the contributions of gay, lesbian and transgendered Americans in school curriculum. However there is an outcry from traditional values advocates and social conservatives against the proposed bill from State Senator Mark Leno, SB 48.

SB 48 would require that social science texts and other instruction include “a study of the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Americans to the economic, political and social development of California and the United States of America, with particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society. This bill also has rules stating that school districts would have the flexibility to decide which age groups received such instruction. So if Bakersfield wanted to discuss these topics in the junior year of high school and San Francisco wants to discuss this in the fifth grade, then that would be the choice of the particular communities of our state.

Maybe the best idea would be is to have it passively mentioned in our social science textbooks, and if a teacher does not want to discuss the subject then that is the right of the educator or the school district. Maybe if people knew some leading LGBT people in American history such as Oliver Sipple, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who saved President Ford’s life during an assassination attempt in California or Bayard Rustin, a civil rights activist who helped make the March on Washington possible for Martin Luther King people would have better understanding of LGBT people. I just find it absurd from the mouths of legislators such as State Senator Bob Huff that “SB 48 will sexualize the training of our children at an early age”, when there are clauses that prevent school districts from being mandated to discuss these subjects in the early grades and just because people know that Ellen DeGeneres is a lesbian is not going to convert people to be queer.

Just because someone is heterosexual or homosexual, it is not just about sex. You can still be heterosexual or homosexual without talking about sex acts. It is also about affection.

I know that even if we talk about the positive accomplishments of minority communities within our state and nation, people are still going to harbor hostility to various groups. People still want to have the right to teach their prejudices against people, but it is not realistic to expect all of us to live in perfect harmony even though it is our desire. I would love to vote for Republicans, when Governors Brown and Davis laid the seeds that made our state budget crisis worse. However I can understand why California Secretary of State Debra Bowen left the Republican Party in 1984 because the Republican party lacked “compassion and tolerance and respect for others.” Maybe if State Senator Huff and others had more empathy towards LGBT people, perhaps we can reclaim some of those decline to state voters back to the Republican Party.

It is great that Channel 11 and KFI AM in Los Angeles want to help the needy in our area with the Salvation Army, but even though the Salvation Army is a well ran organization that effectively helps out the community they do not help all people with open arms.

Last year I tried sending an email to Clear Channel’s liberal/progressive leaning station to maybe consider their own drive to help out all needy no matter if they are religious or not, straight or queer. Unfortunately I got no email back. Maybe KTLK and KISS and Star 98 could have their own drive like 2 weeks before the KFI/KTTV drive so we could be inclusive in our philanthropy.

I understand people are hurting with an economy that crashed for the last three plus years. No matter what values you have, we should all give what we can for those who do not have. If the Salvation Army is your choice, that is your personal choice and that is great, but we should also showcase the inclusive organizations as well.

I am thinking of seeing about teaming up with other bloggers/facebook/twitter folk to see if we could donate some money to an organization that has open doors and does not exclude.

Assemblywoman Carter (D-Rialto) is known to have divergent views on social issues and frustrates the progressives on the issue of equality of queer Californians. She is one of the rare Democrats that the Stonewall Democrats will refuse to endorse on Election Day.

Problem is the Republicans elect a clone of her in the past two elections (2004 and 2006) and we need a choice, not an echo.

I was reading on Craig’s list that people were annoyed on how unfriendly she is to LGBT issues due to her open endorsement of Proposition 8, that I did mention that maybe the Republicans could have a social liberal run against her to provide some contrast since most of the constituents will not elect a fiscal conservative anyways. The challenger against Assemblywoman Carter does not have to be gay. However the nominee should be an ally of equality.

I will give $50 if a 62nd Assembly District Republican files papers and is an open ally of Log Cabin California and or Equality California in 2010.

UPDATE: Paul Darr of the Libertarian Party is running in the 2010 election against her. Since no Republican wants to run at the time of this update its worthwhile to check his campaign out! – Jan 28 2010
