Tim,
What happened at UC Davis does lead towards hostility which came to UC Riverside. Yes, there are people who helped led to these riots, but its the UC system. This activism (peaceful and violent) has happened since the days of the 1960s for better or worse.

I may not be living in an utopia like the far left folk who want free rides, but fees going upto 20k a year does frustrate us all.

From prior experiences for the last five years, I think the best idea might be web conferences. No matter what campus the UC Regents meet, it should be done via teleconference because demonstrations are going to happen until we get back to stable fees that the average Californian can afford.

It might mean we might have to pare down the layers of administration, maybe have a 30% Online, 70% in campus degree program to save on costs. It might mean begging the state legislators to be pro-business so we can bring forth the revenue to make UC affordable instead of taxing our way to salvation.

The people involved in the occupy movement are working on a misguided effort to sink the credit ratings of those who participate in this protest. However there is one way we could share the message to the colleges and governments about the increasing costs of education and how they pass the buck with student loans. Do not enroll for a semester. If we make the schools empty, then that would also spread a message.

I think the best solution is personal responsibility, if you can not pay the loans off in a reasonable fashion or at least pay half of the cost back you should reconsider the program you enroll for.

Borrowing 100,000 for a BA degree is silly if you are not going to have the ability or future potential to pay the fees. Yes, we need to reasonably fund our state universities. Fees went up 125% since I last went to UC Riverside. Yes, I believe we should not give free rides entirely. However fees should go back to 7 or 8 thousand instead of 12 thousand for the University of California as an example.

Basically all I am asking for is people to borrow what they can reasonably pay off. I know student loan debt is a crippling burden and the legal rules stating that students can not declare bankruptcy makes it hard for students to write off this debt. I think limiting how much students can borrow in exchange for being allowed to declare bankruptcy after all avenues are exhausted would be a good idea.

I do understand this economy is rough on many of us, with school districts not offering raises and positions being cut I would like to ask for a big favor from many of you in the field. Just like many school districts do not have money for supplies, many of our parents of your students do not have the money either.

I have written a column on this previously on my blog, but I would like to reemphasize this issue.

School projects should not cost an arm and a leg and there should be a mandate that there should be projects that cost less than 5 dollars for students with families who do not have much money. Families should not need to do a James Cameron production for their book report or atom model project.

Also, there should be a fiscal limit of how much a teacher can mandate in how much can be spent for a school project on the parents. Unfunded mandates are indeed a burden.

Extra credit assignments should not require having to visit the store to build a thirty dollar contraption either. If educators have more empathy on their students parents, then the relationship will greatly improve.

Borders, the former leading bookseller before Amazon became popular in American society is finally pulling the plug. I previously wrote about the topic earlier about how the stores in Montclair and Chino went goodbye, but now the surviving stores such as the location at Rancho Cucamonga’s Victoria Gardens is going to shutter because the company’s bankruptcy reorganization plans failed.

If you are a bargain hunter they will likely do a store closing sale very soon at the Rancho Cucamonga branch.

Sadly Borders forgot to adapt to the times compared to Barnes and Noble.

Thank You to Dennis Saunders for the tip.

An acquaintance of mine got rejected for not having enough experience, but she had four years as a clerk at 2 clothing stores and a movie theater.

When the bowling alley told her she did not have enough experience, but what experience do you actually need for an entry level position at a bowling alley? a community college certificate, a Masters Degree, being laid off from a school district.

It just seems absurd what some employers tell job seekers as their statement for rejection, when you already have experience.

Personally for those of us who have any job, from a part time job to a full time job cleaning toilets we should be happy we have one at all. My sister in June ended up applying to 66 jobs and only got 3 job interviews and no hire yet in the last four months she has been unemployed.

It’s a employer’s market, compared to 2006 when people hired anyone that moved. I used to remember a Las Vegas gas station offering $200 signing bonus for people who wanted to be gas station attendants. Now people are lining up 10-20 people for 1-2 slots at most firms big and small.

My sister’s childhood friend stupidly made a tantrum saying she wanted to be paid the same higher wage as her co-workers at $14, but she was recently hired at $12 and she felt offended. This individual ended up making a tantrum to her new company’s HR department and will likely be layoff bait in the near future.

Right now, the part time job that helped me through college is all I have right now. I would love to have a full time 25-40k a year job, but there is not much right now for the asking. I just make good in an imperfect situation and am trying to get motivated where I could enter a new career and another $10k in student loans to boot where I can finally get some good use out of my degree from UC Riverside.

Even though the pay not be exceptional or the job may cause us deep stress, we should be happy that our situations may be better than others and hope that the economic climate will be better for the time we need to move on to a new company or field of work.

I know the economy is screwed up, but feeding the poor fast food is an utterly bad idea. I know businesses want government aid, but feeding fatty foods to people with their EBT cards seems totally against Michelle Obama’s visions for a healthy America.

My idea would be something fiscal conservatives and health and wellness advocates would endorse. Instead of allowing people to shop at 7-11 or Taco Bell, how about we sponsor high quality cookbooks people could use to cook a variety of recipies and meal plans to stretch their benefit dollars or even for those who still have gainful employment ways they could stretch their money as well.

Since many of the Food Network stars have became cultural icons my idea is to use them to help make quarterly cookbooks on how people could feed their family of 4 on $240 a month. Paperback cookbooks could be printed in government offices, and you could buy a deluxe hardcover edition to help fund food relief organizations at places like Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

My idea would be the ultimate public/private partnership. If we just subsidize fast food we will end up having public heath issues in the long run. Let us do it right from the beginning.

The economy is rough, wages are being cut with teachers are getting fired left and right. However I have one major complaint with teachers in general even though I personally do aspire to join the field in the next few years. Stop giving parents the unfunded mandate of having your students be required to do expensive projects.

Mission projects bust parents pocketbooks when many students and their families are living paycheck to paycheck. 50-100 dollars to complete the project can be better used elsewhere.

I am not speaking only about the infamous mission project or state projects, but even book reports can cost a pretty penny.

Not everyone is from a high wage household and educators in our state should recognize this fact. If we are friendly to the parents that send their children to our schools, then maybe the parents will be more likely to advocate for more funding to prevent education cutbacks.
